I have been a soccermum for the past 17 years. Now this might not be that amazing and Im sure there are dozens more like me out there...but i thought I would start a blog and you never know I might actually help someone else out there....
It all started when my daughter was just 4 years old.. She was forever outside kicking and playing around with different balls....My hubby and I looked around for a sport to get her into and the only sport that she could play at her age was soccer.
She was a star straight away....Yes i know im her mother and she would be a star in my eyes no matter what, however one of her matches she and another little boy ( who has gone onto play for the ollyroos) had to be dragged at half time to give the other kids a chance to play. Between the two of them they had scored a lazy 19 goals.....oh and back then the games were only 15 minute halves....
She played with boys for the first 6 years of her soccer life as there were no girls teams for her age group. Most of the boys in her team treated her with respect and just like another boy on the team until one year she had to go into a new team.....This was met with the same old adage "ohhh I dont want a girl in my team" but the boys that had come with her from the other team stood up for her and soon they all settled down and then they found out she could actually play soccer and was probs better than most of them...(again not a bias mum)pity the coach didnt see this and although the coaches son was good he really did not warrant getting a full game every week and my daughter only get half along with another boy who was out there for fitness......
She went on to to another boys club after being at her first club up until under 10s, this next club was also a boys club and only stayed there a year....Only because she had been noticed by the womens league and we were told that if she wanted to get into State teams she would have to play for a girls club which in hindsight I wish I would have had the guts to say no and let her stay in the boys comp for a couple of more years... I dont care what anyone says boys and girls play the game of soccer differently and if you have a daughter who has some skill make sure they stay in a boys league for as long as they can cos that is where they will learn most of their game sense.
So she moved again to the new club...At the age of 12 she was playing for the Under 17 girls team and filling in for the State League open age womens team.....So she was playing two games a week... and training 2 nights a week for them and also being part of the State Under 14 teams that in July would go across to Nationals to compete against other states... of course i was out there all the time, driving her to trainings, sitting with the other mums, waiting in the rain and wind, (luckily we dont get snow here.) But of course this is what you do for you kids...but I wanted to do more....so i became a Sports Trainer.
And this is where I will stop at this point....
But more will come....with the ups and downs of all that i can remember. so please stay tuned
